Geeky Valentine: Sweet ideas for your player one

One of my favourite things to do is find geeky ways to celebrate holidays.

Whether it’s a matching set of Super Mario sweaters for that tacky sweater party, or the perfect superhero getup for Halloween, there’s always a fun way to mix it up.

Valentine’s Day is no different.

As far as I’m concerned, this is not a day to make up for the rest of the year, or to rub it in anyone’s face. It’s a day to celebrate what you share with the people in your life.

I have to be honest, though. Because Valentine’s Day hasn’t historically held a lot of exceptional importance for me, I had trouble thinking of geeky things the boyfriend and I could do together this year.

So, I sat down last week and started to brainstorm—which really just means I turned to my trusty old friend Google.

It didn’t take long for my creative brain to kick in, and here are some of the ideas I came up with. Feel free to borrow them for your own geeky Valentine, too!

Bake some sweets together.

When Shane and I met, it did not take him long to figure out that dessert is a particular weakness of mine, and that baking is my answer for pretty much every special occasion. Or regular occasion. If I can make cookies, I am a happy camper.

I can’t even begin to tell you how sad I was when I learned that a regular cookie sheet doesn’t fit in my apartment-sized oven.

Okay, back on track.

It also did not take him long to figure out that the only things better than sweets are geeky sweets.

That’s why it was pretty much fate that he introduced me to Nerdy Nummies. If you’re unfamiliar with it, the popular YouTube cooking show makes the most adorable geeky foods for all occasions.

This cute little recipe is a great way to celebrate with your player one; either surprise them when they get home, or take some time and create your culinary masterpieces together!

Play your favourite game together.

Okay, so you probably guessed this one. If you’re not so big on the crowds that inevitably fill up every local venue on this day of the year, staying in and booting up your mutual favourite game is a perfect answer.

Bonus: Build a blanket fort, order in, and have a picnic while you play. You’re never too old for that.

Go see a movie.

This is pretty much the flipside of staying in to avoid the crowds. It’s a little cliché, but let’s be real here: there’s a reason it’s a popular date night idea!

And no, it doesn’t need to be a rom-com just because it’s Valentine’s Day. It can be, but it doesn’t need to be.

It also doesn’t need to happen exactly on Valentine’s Day. If there’s nothing out that you want to see, or if you really don’t want to deal with the crowds, plan your special date night for another night of the week.

After all, if you put it off by two nights, that’s when Black Panther comes out here in North America. Just saying.

Get them the perfect geeky card.

I have to admit, I am terrible at picking out cards.

I am the person who will spend hours in a card store, second-guessing every idea because nothing is quite what I’m looking for, but I don’t know what I’m looking for, and it just turns into a vicious cycle.

That’s why I love looking for unique cards online. You can find things for pretty much every fandom, and if you’re feeling particularly crafty, you can even make your own!
