All it took was a few lines to get me into a happier mood. Sure, I was exhausted and grouchy and antisocial and a little twitchy, but for all I wasn’t great in person today, suddenly the thoughts were pouring out onto the virtual page with ease.
When I’m writing, I’m in my element. It’s my happy place.
It’s where I can lose myself for hours at a time; sometimes I get quite a little shock when I lift my head from my laptop and realize the sun’s gone and I should have started dinner already.
It’s maybe a little ironic that for all that, I’d never been able to keep a blog longer than three weeks. I’d get excited about a concept, make a site, put up an intro post, maybe a few more—and then I’d forget all about it.
But for all that, the Girly Geek Blog is turning a year old this week.
Where did the time go? So much has happened in the last year. It started as a place where I could go to release my pent-up creative energy; when I started, I was working a job that frustrated me endlessly. I was feeling unfulfilled, because every bit of soul and energy I put into a piece of writing got taken out.
That job later fired me for something that wasn’t my fault, and I spent six months at home inadvertently driving my boyfriend insane and wondering what was next.
Now, I’m happy. I work with good people, I have an amazing relationship with a man who makes me want to be a better person, and I’m starting to feel like a success at life.
I honestly think this blog has a lot to do with that.
It’s given me the confidence to talk about the geeky parts of my life that make me who I am. It’s helped me share what I’m going through, and contextualize a lot of my thoughts that would otherwise get jumbled up in my head. It’s given me a way to see how far I’ve come in just one short year, and it gives me hope to see what the future holds.
Sure, there are lots of things I’ve learned this year that I’d like to do better. Obviously, I don’t read enough, because the Books section has three posts, one of which isn’t even about reading a book.
And I’ve spent too much time redesigning how everything looks, with at least three logo and layout changes this year.
And yeah, I sometimes unintentionally take that amazing man who encouraged me to start blogging in the first place for granted.
But I’m excited to keep learning these things, and to keep improving, and to keep sharing my geeky experiences with all of you. Because the whole point of this is to discover, and share, and get better at the things that define my life.
So, I just want to thank all of you for being here. And to celebrate, I thought I’d put together a list of my favourite geeky adventures from the last year.
How gaming helped me get a job
The making of a Minecraft city
