Lately, we’ve been getting back into Final Fantasy XIV ahead of the Dawntrail expansion!
I had fallen off with it a little because with everything else going on in my life, it was kind of hard to think about the time and effort that goes into a game like FFXIV. Even thinking about materia combinations to get my gatherers ready for the beginning of the expansion was too overwhelming for my poor little brain.
Now, though, I’ve been in a better spot, and my dear husband is all hyped up for the expansion, so we’ve been getting ready for it!
And with that, we’ve been gathering new friends and introducing them to the game that’s taken up way, way too much of my time over the years. I have zero regrets.
It’s fun seeing the story through their fresh eyes.
Obviously, having gotten to the end of Endwalker, I have a very different perspective on the happenings of A Realm Reborn than I did back in the day.
It’s really neat to watch their reactions to the story, seeing them learn it for the first time and experience what I know is going to be a gutwrenching and deeply satisfying story later on.
It’s really nice having someone to help out.
About halfway through last year, I finished all my classes in FFXIV, and since then, I’ve been a little lost. It’s hard to know what to work on when there’s nothing left!
So it’s nice now that I have little sprouts to guide through dungeons, because I can help them learn mechanics and find their own things to enjoy about the game. It’s the first time I’ve really gotten to step into the mentor role in a genuine way.
It’s funny watching them complain about things.
One of the friends we’ve gotten back into FFXIV has long joked about the early chapters being a walking simulator. He’s been trudging all over the map for early quests, and has been very unhappy about the whole situation.
It’s kind of funny watching that play out when you know how things will change for him later on. It will get easier, and I know that, but I think I’ll let them find out for themselves!
And it’s good to see the fire rekindled.
I think games like FFXIV are a lot like a long-term relationship. They take work to keep that interest going. And watching new friends play is a lot like watching someone with new relationship energy—which then reminds you of all the good things you had with the game, too. It’s great.
